Brandon and Danica put an incredible amount of effort and thought into their store, the experience of their customers, and their online presence. They are also very considerate of the community that they serve and are willing to put their necks out for what they believe in, even when faced with adversity from unfair critics. These critics have issues with the lengths to which Brandon and Danica's strive to create a welcoming environment to ALL of their customers and, frankly, think too simply about what the store is trying to achieve. To me, Variant Edition is not just a "store" to exchange money for goods but a place to hang out, chat about comics and ideas, and discover new ideas and recommendations (and wind up really enjoying them). By keeping an open mind and purchasing some of their weekly recommendations my son and I have gotten more deeply into comics and are definitely the better for it. Keep up the good work!
The shop's staff are helpful and welcoming, and I'm always particularly impressed by their used comic books. I've never found another comic book (or regular book) store in Edmonton that can boast such an excellent selection. I've found some real gems in that store from many different genres, a couple of which I'm pretty sure are out of print. I always like to stop by and see what new-to-me comics might be available. If you're looking for new floppies and trades, they also have a wide variety. The core superhero monthlies are there, of course, but they definitely strive to demonstrate the potential of the medium outside of that one genre.
Variant Edition is hands down the best comic store I've ever been to. They are literally the only reason my wife and I have started reading comics, and we're thrilled with the guidance Brandon and Danica have given us since we started. We would never have considered having a file, but their care in helping us choose things we would love convinced us. Their customer service is exceptional, and they even mail out our orders, since we live in Red Deer. We also love regular books, and their used section is a treat. Truly a community-minded business, driven to create a safe and welcoming environment.
I adore VE, and before they were available, I only purchased my comics online. I make an effort now to buy from them, because they are discerning, inclusive, and extremely devoted to stellar customer service. They make excellent and thoughtful reading recommendations based on your interests and previous reads, and are extremely involved in their local community as well. They go out of their way to provide a welcoming space for hobby groups, to diversify the content provided so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy what they want to read, and to host fun community events that everyone can enjoy. They are my first go-to for finding the comics I am interested in purchasing, and when they dont have something in, they are more than willing to order it for me. I highly recommend giving them a try - they are a fantastic business.
Though I live a few blocks away from one of the larger comic stores in Edmonton, I shop at Variant Edition. The owners are great, the selection is good, and if you're willing to wait they can order almost anything in for you. Their prices are also awesome. But the thing I love most about the store is their welcoming approach to comic books. They realize not everyone walking through the doors has been collecting for 20 years and knows the history of every superhero. They're great at suggesting new books to try, or helping to answer any questions you may have. Wonderful place for the hardcore collector, or the person who only buys a couple of trade paperbacks a year like myself.
